Safina hopes to play ahead in Australian Open

After being tearfully pulling out of the WTA Championships with a serious back injury, Dinara Safina has entered the Brisbane International . Safina said Wednesday in Doha that she faced six weeks of rest before stepping back on the court, and a potentially long rehabilitation process that could see her miss the Australian Open, which begins Jan. 18. The Brisbane International runs from Jan. 3-10. She said, " I am looking forward to the challenge and I cannot wait to get there.” After stopping play in the third game, Safina, in tears, walked over to her chair and covered her face with a towel before retiring. She said one of the discs in her lower back was “starting to fracture,” and that she has been dealing with the pain for three months. Safina is a fighter and I know she is really looking forward to returning to Queensland. I have no doubt she will be here in January.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced the tournament seedings here on Tuesday with Roger Federer and Dinara Safina as seeded No. 1 for the U.S. Open.


Both ATA and WTA rankings followed USTA to annouce these two names. Safina heads the women's field ahead of second-ranked Serena Williams. Safina is 0-3 in Grand Slam tournament finals, while Williams is the defending champion at Flushing Meadows and has won 11 major championships.


Two-time U.S. Open winner Venus Williams is seeded No. 3, followed by Elena Dementieva (deh-ment-YAY-vah) and Jelena Jankovic (YEH-leh-nah JANK-oh-vich).


Five-time defending champion Federer is followed by Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic (JOKE-oh-vich) and 2003 champion Andy Roddick.


The draw is on Thursday and the play will begin from Monday.

The baby gave him time to settle down with his new family members and support his wife Mirka who delivered them on Thursday.

Federer shared his happiness online on Facebook.

In a statement released on his Facebook page, Federer said: "I have some exciting news to share with you. Late last night, in Switzerland, Mirka and I became proud parents of twin girls. This is the best day of our lives."

Fans Ejected From Australian Open Tournament

MELBOURNE, 23 Jan 2009, Friday - The clash between Serbian and Bosnian fans lead to ejection of 30 people from the Melbourne Park grounds of the tournament. Even two were arrested for ethnic violation, throwing chairs, trading punches and kicks on each other. The whole issue started when two groups of fans were streaming out of the Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Bosnia's American Amer Delic. The verbal abuse later took the shape of full-fledged fighting among the groups. But within few minutes police controlled the matter very quickly and effectively. Few arrests and fines were imposed to violeters to control the situation.
